30% of Municipal Solid Waste is compostable food and yard waste.
The fourth annual Stop & Swap aimed to reduce waste by providing clothes, books, and small objects and appliances a second life. WCM staff and students dropped off clothes and books they no longer needed and browsed for free items that others donated.
This year’s event saw a 38% increase in donations from last year, with over 1500 lbs collected (1070 lbs of clothing and shoes, 150 books, and 312 lbs of small objects/appliances), most of which were exchanged within the WCM community. The remaining 439 pounds were donated:
- 81 lbs of clothing went to the Students Led Clinic, which provides accessible healthcare to uninsured adults through consultation, treatment, preventative care, and referral services, at little or no cost.
- 289 lbs of clothing were donated to the St Mary’s Clothing Drive
- Books (82 lbs) were donated to Housing Works.
- Small objects and appliances (57 lbs) were donated to Goodwill.
As always, a special thank you goes out to the volunteers who helped run the event and donated their time to make it a success, especially the WCM Environmental Health Collective (ECO)—students who work to support environmental health education, activism, and conservation at WCM. Without you, the event would not be possible.
