Earth Day was founded in 1970. U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin called for a nationwide demonstration in the spring of 1970 aimed to raise awareness of environmental issues. It worked. The first national Earth Day was April 22, 1970.
Prior to the development of the Office of Energy and Sustainability, Weill Cornell Medicine campus-wide sustainability efforts were managed through the Sustainability Leadership Council. The council was comprised of employees from central administration as well as from clinical departments. The council led sustainability planning and coordinated efforts across departments to reduce waste and conserve energy.
